You can access the Restricted and Protected Project Fields setting in the Control Panel to specify which project fields users can't edit in projects by setting a protection level for each field.
Setting a protection level for project fields ensures that only authorized users can update fields, thereby reinforcing "least-privilege-based" access on projects.
To access the Restricted and Protected Project Fields setting, click the following icon.
You can view the Restricted and Protected Project Fields settings form.
To specify project fields as Restricted or Protected, you need the "Define Restricted and Protected Project Fields" permission in the "Projects" permissions group, or you should be a member of a group with it.
Settings Options
The form includes the following settings options.
Protection Level
The "Protection Level" settings option lets you specify whether users can add a value to a blank project field or change an existing value. For example, adding a client PO number to the blank Client PO Number field or changing the price type in the Product Price Type field.
You can set the following values for the project fields seen under each tab in the form.
None: Setting the field to "None" allows editing it.
Restricted: Setting the field to "Restricted" prevents users from editing it. Only users with the "Edit Restricted Project Fields" permission in the "Project Editor" permissions group can edit Restricted fields.
Protected: Setting the field to "Protected" prevents all users, including those in the built-in Administrator group, from editing it. You can edit Protected fields only when they are transferred to an SI-supported integration.
The following screenshot shows project fields set to different protection levels.
Show Fields
The "Show Fields" settings option lets you see the project fields for which you have set Restricted or Protected protection levels.
After you set the required protection levels for the fields under a tab, click Show Fields. A pop-up appears with the Restricted and Protected fields.
Clear Fields
The "Clear Fields" settings option can be used to clear the protection levels you have set for the project fields under a tab.
If you have set protection levels for multiple fields and want to set higher levels to one or two fields or none, click Clear Fields.
Click Yes in the confirmation modal to set all fields to "None" at once.
You can later set a higher protection level for fields if needed.
Project Fields
The project fields you can set protection levels for are categorized under the following tabs: General, Contact, Address, Resources, Notes, and Custom Fields. These are the same tabs and fields seen in the Project Information dialog in Project Editor.
You can use the Protection Level, Show Fields, and Clear Fields settings options as described in this section on each tab.
General
You can set protection levels for the following fields under the General tab.
Client, Client Number, and Client PO Number
Project Name, Project Number, Status, and Assigned To
Sales Rep, Project Manager, and Designer
Estimated Close Date and Actual Close Date
Project Start Date and Project End Date
Price Type, Budget, and Currency
Setting a field to Restricted or Protected greys out the field in the Project Information dialog in Project Editor.
Contact
You can set the protection level to update project contacts.
If the Contact field is set to Restricted or Protected, the options to add, delete, and edit contact details are greyed out in projects.
Address
You can set the protection level for a project's site address and billing address.
If the Site Address or Billing Address field is set to Restricted or Protected, you can't enter, paste, or validate the address. You can still copy the address, check it on Google Maps, and get directions from your location.
Resources
You can set the protection level for updating the resources assigned to projects.
If the Resources field is set to Restricted or Protected, you can't assign resources to projects or remove them from projects.
Notes
You can set the protection level for adding or updating project notes.
You cannot add notes to a project if the Notes field is set to Restricted or Protected.
Custom Fields
Under the Custom Fields tab, you can set protection levels if you have created custom fields for projects under Project Custom Fields in Control Panel.

Custom fields set to Restricted or Protected don't allow you to add, select, or update values.
After you have set the protection level for all required project fields in all tabs, click "Save."
Edit Restricted Project Fields
In the Project Information dialog in Project Editor, a user can edit fields set to the protection level "Restricted" only if the user has the "Edit Restricted Project Fields" permission under the "Project Editor" permissions group.
The following screenshot shows only 3 fields that a user without the Edit Restricted Project Fields permission can update in the Project Information dialog. The other fields are greyed out.
